What Is FASTag for Commercial Vehicles?

FASTag is an RFID-based electronic toll payment system used for cashless toll collection. A FASTag is affixed to the vehicle's windscreen and linked to an account from which the applicable toll amount is deducted when the vehicle passes through a FASTag-enabled toll plaza.

FASTag is vehicle-specific, which means a tag issued for one vehicle should not be transferred to another vehicle. Maintaining sufficient balance is also important because an insufficient balance can affect FASTag transactions at toll plazas.

How Does FASTag Work for Trucks and Commercial Vehicles?

The FASTag process is straightforward:

  1. FASTag is issued for the vehicle after the required vehicle and KYC details are submitted.
  2. The tag is affixed to the vehicle's windscreen.

Which FASTag Class Does My Truck Need?

The correct FASTag class depends on the vehicle type and axle configuration. For example:

  • A three-axle commercial vehicle falls under Class 6.
  • A bus or truck falls under Class 7 where applicable.
  • Vehicles with 4 to 6 axles fall under Class 12.
  • Vehicles with 7 or more axles fall under Class 15.

A reader at the toll lane deducts the amount from the linked account, so the truck doesn't stop for cash. Each tag is tied to one vehicle and one class. How do I get a FASTag for my truck?
Confirm your truck's tag class from its axle count, keep the RC and owner KYC documents ready, and apply through an issuing bank or an authorised agent. Which FASTag class is used for a 6-axle truck?
A 6-axle truck uses FASTag class 12, which covers trucks with 4, 5 and 6 axles. Trucks with seven or more axles use class 15, and two-axle trucks use class 7. What is the difference between FASTag class 7, class 12 and class 15?
The difference is axle count. Class 7 is for two-axle trucks and buses, class 12 is for trucks with four to six axles, and class 15 is for multi-axle trucks with seven axles or more. Toll rates follow the class, so a tag in the wrong class can cause problems at the plaza.
What documents are required for a commercial vehicle FASTag?
An individual owner usually needs the vehicle's RC, driving licence, PAN, Aadhaar with address, owner photo, latest insurance copy, and a mobile number and email. Companies add the Certificate of Incorporation, company PAN and income tax return, plus the director's or promoter's PAN, Aadhaar and photo. Issuers can ask for more.
Do I need a separate FASTag for each truck in my fleet?
Yes. A FASTag works for one vehicle only, so a fleet of twenty trucks needs twenty tags, each in the class that matches its truck. Is the FASTag annual pass available for trucks?
No. The FASTag annual pass is meant for non-commercial private vehicles such as cars, jeeps and vans. Trucks and other commercial vehicles keep paying tolls from their regular FASTag balance. Pass rules and fees are revised by NHAI from time to time, so check its official channels for the latest terms.
What should I do if a toll plaza can't read my FASTag or my tag is blacklisted?
Move to another FASTag lane first, then call the 1033 helpline from your mobile. Check that your balance is above the toll amount and that your KYC is complete, since low balance and pending KYC are common reasons a tag gets flagged. Your issuer is the one who can clear a blacklisting.
How can I recharge a truck's FASTag, and how much balance should I keep?
Most issuers allow recharge through their portal or app, UPI, net banking, cards, bill-payment apps, or a FASTag agent. Keep enough balance to cover the tolls on your whole route, plus a buffer, since low balance is a common reason for rejection. Minimum amounts depend on the issuer.
